The expansion to Mount Sheridan Plaza provides a high level of retail to the southern growth areas of Cairns which have, until this time been under serviced, providing a significant subregional retail destination for the community.
The expansion of the existing 14,500 sqm plaza has taken the completed centre to 21,000 sqm with a total of 1,100 car parks. The centre now includes Kmart, Woolworths, Reject Shop, and a new 300 seat food court and a further 40 specialty stores, all complimenting the existing Coles supermarket and 22 stores.
Prior to and after the tender award, Broad engaged with the local community to utilise as many local subcontractors and suppliers as possible.
During the project, the team dealt with a variety of challenges including changes to the sequencing programme, inclement weather conditions (including a cyclone) and the effects of a large organisation placed into receivership which directly affected two service subcontractors, amongst others. The existing centre also remained open to the public throughout the entire works.
Broad commenced the project late 2010 and achieved practical completion on 5 September 2012. The grand opening of the Plaza took place the next day and drew a crowd of over 13,000 people.
The teams’ collaborative approach to the overall project plan maintained high safety and quality standards, delivering the best possible outcome for the client.
