Local engagement of services

Positioned on the former site of the Maryborough Knitting Mills, which operated on the site from the early 1920s and during its heydays was a major employer in the region, this new 8000sqm development for Pomersan Pty Ltd provides a significant boost to the central Victorian community.

The development is home to a new Coles Supermarket and K-mart Department Store with linking malls and 12 specialty shops. The site has two unique features:

  • the retention of the Knitting Mills brick chimney
  • complex geotechnical solution due to Gold Rush mining.

The 82 feet high chimney contains some 55,000 bricks and while not regarded as having any substantial historical significance, it has been a prominent feature in the surrounding streetscapes and will maintain a link with the former use of the site.

Before housing the knitting mills, the site was thoroughly worked over during the Gold Rush era to a depth of about 9 metres and required extensive attention to the design of the foundations on which to base the new development.

The extensive additional geotechnical investigation required to develop a suitable foundation system resulted in a combination of deepened foundations in some locations, the use of traditional ground slabs, joint-free slabs to the trading floors and a raft slab to the mall and shops area.

The project was supported through a joint venture arrangement with the Melbourne-based construction firm APM Group.

Local and regional service contractors were engaged for the provision of all the services; electrical; mechanical; hydraulics; fire systems and civil works across the project; with structure packages of steel; pre-cast panels; and concrete sourced from Melbourne suppliers.
