In July 2010 we were awarded the Early Contractor Involvement tender for the State Government, to work with the nominated design and construction team to design and scope the Fast Track Accommodation Project.
This project involved the simultaneous construction of five two-storey accommodation blocks at Albany, Casuarina and Hakea prisons. Working closely with the Department of Corrective services in the initial stages of the project, we developed the design and detailed project plan and programme. In parallel to this process we developed the Guaranteed Contract Sum for the delivery phase of the project.
Construction of the Hakea cell block was on the perimeter of the live prison facility. The other two construction sites at Casuarina and Albany, two cell blocks each, were more central to the existing facilities. These buildings feature additional unique prison security features when compared with a traditional building.
The construction works utilised large prefabricated components to enhance both the speed of delivery and management of prison security logistics. Each block contains 64 cells accommodating two inmates per cell in a double bunk configuration which also includes a shower and toilet.
The predominantly pre-cast concrete structures feature suspended pre-cast upper floors and additional unique prison security features when compared with a traditional building. Working within operating prisons requires strict adherence to security protocols throughout all aspects of the project delivery.
Security was a key factor of the project and emphasises our capability to handle such a sensitive project. The security management challenges greatly affected the logistics of the build, with clearances required for all personnel and limited movements around the construction site.
